3 Simple Steps to Better Health; 3 Simple Steps to Better Healthcare

Change is never easy. Habits are hard to break. People are stuck in their ways.
Really? I don’t think so. I think small changes can be simple. And those changes can make a BIG impact.
When a patient needs to improve their health, I often ask them to do three simplest things.
- Swap out those sodas and sweet tea for WATER. Just drink water.
- MOVE. Take a walk outside for 15min every day.
- And, prioritize SLEEP. Set aside 7-8 hours for sleep, consistently.
Those 3 simple things can work wonders. Without changing anything else, without giving up a bad habit, without losing any weight, without adding any medication, their health improves.
And it starts to improve quickly. They feel better.
Imagine if we asked for a few simple changes in healthcare.
- Swap out those network PCPs for DPC. Just Direct Primary Care.
- MOVE away from expensive, employer based insurance and towards a true catastrophic coverage plan.
- And, use HSAs to prioritize a healthy lifestyle. Focus on diet exercise sleep, consistently.
Those 3 steps could work wonders. Things could improve quickly.
And quite honestly, they are pretty simple.
DPC + catastrophic coverage + HSA = better healthcare.

Good post. I will interject as I always do, DPC will not work everywhere. Go to the wrong geographic area, ie. a lot of poor people and one WILL go bankrupt PERIOD!! End of discussion. It WILL NOT work everywhere! DPC is touted to be the “savior” of FP but that’s a big lie. Nice work if you can get it but go to the wrong geographic area and a DPC practice will fail miserably. I’ve seen FP’s leave the group practice I was in and start a local practice. The group practice nor the hospital didn’t do anything “negative” to them. In fact the group practice still took call for them!! (Revenue generator) Every single “independent” practice financially failed and the docs eventually moved away!!
I think med students have caught on to this and are leaving for specialties unless FP is the last resort if they don’t match.
