The Power of a Business Plan

Author: Landen Green, DO
Not having a business plan is like starting a cross country round trip without a plan.
I am sure we would find places to sleep, food to eat, and have fun. We would drive around and eventually find our way back home. But is that the best, most efficient way to go about it?
Same is true with a business. Starting any business is difficult but can be made even more difficult without a clear vision and plan. Business plans can set you up for success, make for great reference points when making decisions, help define short and long term goals, assist in envisioning the culture/brand you envision and provide a source of reflection and inspiration.
If creating a business plan, here are sections I encourage you to consider:
- The history and projection of DPC.
- Your Mission, Vision, and Values
- Your why
- Jobs and job descriptions
- Operations and management plans
- Development and designs
- Company name
- Logo
- Legal structure
- Regulations specific to state
- Short term goals
- Long term goals
- Marketing strategies – in the industry, detailed target audience, member engagement
- Competitive analysis
- Company advantages
- Pricing structures
- Cancellation policies
- Business financials – capital, start up cost, estimated monthly, estimated year one, estimated annual projections
- Employee payment, including owner
- Research and development
The most important benefit of the Business Plan is clearly defining the mission, vision, values, and the why of the company. Referencing this for business decisions regarding location, new purchases, pricing structure, hiring, firing, communication policies, and everything else can be so important and in many cases make the right decision clearly stand out.
Now, in hopes not to embarrass myself and be open for the sake of the movement, attached is my business plan from three years ago.
Some parts have changed a little overtime and others have changed A LOT as priorities change with life. It will continue to change with life changes and as I learn more about DPC and my community – but the mission, vision, and values will stay the same.
