The Best Time To Plant A Seed…

We’ve all heard the quote, “The best time to plant a seed was 20 years ago. The second best time to plant a seed is now.” We usually hear it from some financial planner trying to convince us to invest. And when we do hear it, from whatever source, they are almost always talking about the second half of this quote. I want to talk about the first half.
DPC, as a whole, is in its infancy. We are in the “20 years ago” phase of this movement. And, most of us are in this “20 years ago” phase of our practice as most reading this have been practicing for less than 5 years. Both individually, and collectively, we are in the formative years of Direct Care.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve had the opportunity to advise several practices as they grow. Consistently, those that do the best, are those that think long-term. Those who think two years out are eclipsed by those who think 5 years out. And, those who have a 5-year plan have success that is superseded by those who develop a 10-year plan.
Today, my message is a short one. Plan for the long term. Plant good seeds now. Do it in the habits that you develop as a physician and as a business owner. Plant the seeds of how you “train your patients” so that you can best care for them. Plant the seeds of smart financial decisions. Plant the seed of hiring good long-term employees who share your values. Plant the seed of lifelong learning. Plant the seeds of good health and good relationships. You are in the beginning of this new phase of your life. Leverage this time of change to your benefit and the welfare of your future!
