A Second Pitch for Financial Advisors/Wealth Managers: DPC as “Wealth Preservation” for Your Clients

This is part two of pitching to financial advisors/wealth managers as I’m opening a new DPC. Part one can be seen here.

As I mentioned in my last post, it struck me that many financial advisors/wealth managers and DPC physicians have mutually aligned goals: we both need our patients/clients to be alive to get paid!

Here is the second executive brief for financial advisors/wealth managers to convey the win-win-win for them, our clients/patients, and us (DPC physicians). I hope this creates an additional “aha” moment for the financial advisor/wealth manager.

Please feel free to copy, paste and modify for your DPC practice. As Christy Gupton posted recently, we need a lot more DPC practices to continue to positively change healthcare in this country.

Notice that I even put at the end of the brief that my practice may not be what’s best for a particular client or the employees of a particular financial advisor/wealth management office. But I do want a position myself as someone who can direct those folks to physician owned and run DPC practices as DINO’s continue to proliferate!

So, how is this worked out for me? I have my third financial advisor meeting booked within a few weeks. Just this morning, at the same coffee shop where I was meeting with a financial advisor, one of my other DPC colleagues in town was meeting with a different financial advisor to discuss the same brief! We’ll see how this actually pans out for future patients.

Executive Brief: Direct Primary Care (DPC) as a Wealth Preservation Strategy

Subject: Enhancing Client Longevity and Asset Protection through Direct Primary Care

1. The Financial Advisor’s “Hidden” Asset

Healthcare inflation is consistently the greatest threat to retirement assets and long-term financial planning. When clients rely solely on reactive, insurance-based healthcare systems (Medicare or BUCA—Blue Cross, United, Cigna, Aetna), they often experience fragmented care, delayed treatment, and exorbitant out-of-pocket costs for minor issues.

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a subscription-based healthcare model that removes the insurance middleman from primary care. By recommending DPC, you are not just offering health advice; you are implementing a risk-mitigation strategy to preserve your clients’ investable assets.

2. DPC vs. Concierge: Clearing the Misconception

A common misconception is that DPC is an expensive “luxury” service akin to Concierge Medicine. This is false.

Concierge Medicine: Expensive ($2,000–$10,000+ per year), bills insurance in addition to the retainer, and targets the ultra-wealthy.

Direct Primary Care (DPC): Affordable ($70–$150/month), does not bill insurance (removing administrative bloat), and targets the average household. It operates on a transparent, subscription-based model.

The Bottom Line: A $1,200 annual DPC membership costs less than a single-family deductible!

3. The Mutual Win

For the Client: They receive same-day access, longer appointments, and proactive management of chronic conditions. They stop “bleeding” money on deductibles and urgent care co-pays.

For the Advisor: Your clients stay healthier longer. They avoid “surprise” medical bills that force the liquidation of assets at inopportune market times. Your relationship deepens as you demonstrate care for their total financial well-being, not just their portfolio.

4. The “Social Security” Analogy

Financial advisors often tell clients: “You cannot rely on Social Security alone to fund your retirement; you need a diversified strategy (401k, IRA, brokerage).”

Apply this same logic to healthcare: Clients cannot rely on Medicare or standard BUCA insurance alone for excellent care.

Medicare/BUCA is the “Social Security” of health—it provides a basic, reactive safety net.

DPC is the “Private Investment” strategy—it provides the proactive, personalized, and high-touch care required to actually optimize health outcomes and avoid costly medical crises.

5. Strategic Benefits for Specific Client Profiles

Client DemographicThe DPC Advantage
UninsuredProvides comprehensive, low-cost access to a physician, eliminating the need to pay “cash prices” for every minor ailment.
Health SharingHealth Sharing plans are cost-effective but don’t cover primary care. DPC is the perfect, necessary companion to make these plans functional.
High-Deductible (HSA)DPC allows the client to reserve their HSA funds for true catastrophes, rather than burning them on recurring copays, urgent care, or routine check-ups. HSA funds can be used for DPC membership fees.
MedicareTraditional Medicare often lacks coordination and does not always cover testing recommended by your physician. DPC provides the “Quarterback” of care, managing chronic conditions to prevent the hospitalizations that drain retirement accounts and provides affordable testing options when not covered by Medicare.

6. Integration into Financial Planning

Financial planning is about preparing for volatility. A health crisis is the ultimate volatility event. Integrating DPC into your advice demonstrates a holistic approach:

  • Reduce “Leakage”: Identify clients paying thousands in deductible costs for issues a DPC physician could have managed for <$100 monthly fee.
  • Asset Preservation: By shifting care to a proactive DPC model, clients reduce the likelihood of major health events that trigger asset liquidation.
  • Retention: Providing high-value, non-traditional advice (like recommending DPC) positions you as a trusted partner in their life, not just an asset manager.

Next Steps for the Advisor:

Advise: During annual reviews, ask: “Are you paying thousands in insurance deductibles for basic care? We might be able to redirect that cash flow into your investments by looking at a DPC model.”
