Beware of the Drift

Henry Ford said, “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”
It is a temptation in every practice to give in to the many requests of those that we ultimately want to impress. And, sometimes we let that happen. It never happens quickly. Rather it is the small and incremental departure from the original purpose that results in us drifting away from our original plan. Inch by inch the focus changes, and before you know it, the whole practice has changed.
It happens on both ends of the spectrum…
If a practice is growing slowly, there is a temptation to branch out to offerings that are “guaranteed money”, or overextend oneself in an effort to meet every want and need of current and potential patients.
On the other end of that spectrum, with a quickly growing practice, a doctor will be enticed to add other things hoping they will see the same success with those as they did with their core DPC practice. Whether it is apprehension or opportunism, this can lead to “drift”.
Start with WHY you are doing a DPC practice and stay with that. You might find yourself branching off into other things, but as long as you are fulfilling the primary reason behind pursuing your own practice, you will succeed!
