The Man On The Bicycle

The morning started out early and reflective.  After an intense, but energizing, therapy session before clinic, I found myself in need of movement. And lo and behold, a rescheduled patient left an opening for this. South Pasadena, California, has a beautiful neighborhood for walking to gather my thoughts and go hug some trees. The rustle of the leaves and the sway of their branches bring me peace.

As I walked to one of my favorite cul-de-sacs where my dream homes nestle amidst the bushes and trees, I saw a man on a bicycle. He did not venture out of the area and round and round he went. He had a smile on I found myself dancing to the music he was playing. He was in his bliss and just enjoying the moment. Suddenly I realized that so was I.

Having a DPC practice has allowed me to have new experiences. When I worked in corporate medicine, I always felt an urgency to move fast and go, go, go. I had somewhere to be and a task to complete. That was hard on my body and soul.  

Today I treated myself to an extra 5 min of walking and I was blessed by the magic of seeing someone move their body without pressure or speed; just softness and mindfulness. And so here I am, finding my way. I have a new relationship with time, money, speed, urgency, my magnificent husband Chris and myself. I remember that I am here to love, to be loved, and to experience. And I am choosing to experience the deliciousness of unhurried moments. DPC has given me so much more than I imagined. And for that I am eternally grateful. I feel wealthy because I have running water, electricity, freedom, fulfillment, autonomy and love. What a gift!

About April Soto, MD

April Soto was born and raised in Guatemala to Puerto Rican Missionaries. She came to the US to attend university and medical school at University of California San Francisco. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, Ca , a 1-year Fellowship in HIV Medicine at Los Angeles County-University of California, 2-year fellowship in Integrative Medicine through Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine in San Diego, Ca. She worked at Kaiser Permanent for 13.5 years in Family Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Family Medicine Surgical Services and served as the Wellness Champion for the Family Medicine Residents. Dr Soto is also trained in psychedelic services and offers Ketamine, Breathwork and Biofield Medicine/Energy Healing services for patients with mental health concerns. She enjoys complementing western medicine along with addressing the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional needs of her patients as well. She meditates daily and enjoys time in nature. Boogie boarding alongside the surfers brings her great joy! She lives in Los Angeles, Ca with her beloved husband Chris.
